An Introduction

As teachers and students we are constantly flooded images of hatred, pain, and suffering in Africa. But even in the sad stories we can find many glimmers of hope and realize the power we have to change the world. But Africa is no dark continent. Africa has solutions in addition to its problems. We hope these stories will help you connect with Africans not so different from yourself!

Kukummi is a student organization that aims to use storytelling in multimedia dimensions as a tool for education and social action. Focused on building bridges between different races, ethnicities, and ages, Kukummi is based on the idea of empowering youth to take action on issues that matter to them. Youth led, we are made up of intergenerational committees and student chapters. We invite you to use our resources and get involved in our projects. Visit our web site for more information at www.kukummi.org.

We are excited to provide you with a wide range of stories of Africans from Sudanese to South Africans, environmental activists to refugees. Although the purpose of these resources is for classroom or assembly use by teachers and students, we also hope you share these stories with friends and family. We invite you to join Kukummi, because we are your organization and we need your input! Please contact us with any questions, speaker requests, or to request any of our other resources.
